In 1971, Joe Acanfora helped found a new campus organization - the Homophiles of Penn State (HOPS) - dedicated to protecting the rights of homosexuals and increasing public understanding of homosexuality. When the University refused to allow HOPS to operate as a student organization, Acanfora and 3 others sued to compel such recognition. HOPS' lawsuit ultimately was successful and the issue captured the attention of the local media, the Penn State student body and administration officials over the course of the following year.
